Since January, our friends in Room 1 have been diving into a hands-on study all about restaurants. They’ve had thoughtful discussions about the food we eat, where we eat it, and how it gets from farms to kitchens and onto our plates. After spring break, the learning expanded beyond the classroom as students walked across the street to visit local restaurants. These neighborhood field trips gave children the chance to see real kitchens, meet restaurant staff, and observe how food is prepared and served—bringing their classroom conversations to life in a meaningful, tangible way.
Inspired by what they saw and learned, the children began imagining what it would be like to open a restaurant of their own. Their ideas quickly turned into plans, and a new question emerged: What if we grew the food ourselves? Now, we’re in the exciting beginning stages of creating a classroom garden to support our very own “restaurant.” This final phase of the project blends creativity, community, and sustainability—and we can’t wait to see where our students’ imaginations and teamwork will take them next.
