Planting Seeds

Planting Seeds

At the end of last school year, the students did an investigation of different types of melons and citrus fruits. Once the investigation was over the students decided to plant the left-over seeds in our classroom sensory table, they learned how to plant seeds and how to care for them once they have been planted. After many weeks of watering them and watching them develop in the sensory table the children decided that they wanted to see how their fruit would grow outside. A group of students chose to replant their sprouts on the playground hoping that when they came back next year something would have grown.

Much to our surprise when we returned for the new school year the students discovered that melons had grown where they planted their sprouts. The children were very eager to start their investigation of the growing melons. The student researched how to care for the melons, did some observational drawings and taste tested the melons after they harvested them.

The students have been extremely interested in creating a restaurant in our classroom as well. We have been discussing all the things needed in our restaurant have started by creating menus and an open an close sign. This was all sparked when they began creating Pizza out of playdough. We also took a tour of our schools kitchen to get an idea of what else we may need in our restaurants kitchen.
